Chapter 13

—What doesn’t kill you fucks you up mentally.—

“We are not going by your house,” Xavier said.

Layla crossed her arms over her chest and sat on the butter-smooth leather couch in the living room. “Then I’m not going anywhere with you.”

“Whatever it is you need, we can buy. I have a shitload of money.” There was a little tic in his jaw, but even without it, the frustration on his face was clear. His dark green eyes flared with annoyance.

She told herself not to find that sexy. “You can’t buy this.”

“Fine. I’ll send someone else to get it.”

“You said my place was under surveillance. That there were cameras you could check.” She’d known that Gage had set them up at Nova’s house ages ago, and Xavier had confirmed it by telling her that he was able to monitor her place.

He seemed to fight for patience. “What is it you need?”

“It’s a snow globe.” One of her most precious possessions, as ridiculous as it sounded.

He blinked, clearly surprised. “I’ll buy you a hundred snow globes. A thousand. Anything you want. But I want to get on the road and get away from here now. It’ll be easier for me to focus once I’ve got you holed up somewhere safe.”

“I thought you said this place was safe,” she said, feeling only a little obnoxious for needling him.

“It is safe. I meant safer.” He let out a low growl of frustration and turned away from her. His back was broad, the muscles bunched tight beneath the fabric of his long-sleeved T-shirt.

“The snow globe has sentimental value to me. So if we can’t pick it up, you can call someone we trust to pick it up for me. It’s on the left little side table in my bedroom.”

When he turned back to her, he looked as if his head was about to explode but he simply nodded and pulled out one of his burner phones. Less than two minutes later, he hung up on who she assumed was Axel, given the one-sided conversation she’d heard. “It’s done.”

She smiled sweetly and stood, feeling completely obnoxious by this point and not caring. “Thank you.”

“So what’s up with this snow globe? Was it a gift from…an ex?” She was surprised by his surly tone.

He had no right to be moody or anything. She was in this stupid mess potentially because of him and she was feeling more than annoyed this morning. She’d barely slept and she was heading into the unknown again. “Why would it matter?”

He didn’t respond, simply turned and headed up the stairs.

All right, then.

By the time she was pouring herself a cup of coffee in a to-go tumbler, he returned from upstairs with her little work bag. “I wasn’t kidding when I said I’ll buy you whatever you want. Clothes, shoes, entertainment, anything.”

“Thank you,” she said, securing the top on the tumbler. But money couldn’t buy what she wanted. It couldn’t buy safety or fix her life, and it couldn’t make things between them the way she wanted.
